Used Excavator Volvo EC290 Main Parts Pictures

The Volvo EC290 is a larger, more powerful hydraulic crawler excavator that offers robust performance for demanding tasks in the construction, mining, and heavy equipment industries. Below are the main parts of the Volvo EC290 excavator:

1. Engine

  • Volvo D6D diesel engine powers the EC290. It's a 6-cylinder, turbocharged, intercooled engine designed to provide high power and efficiency. The engine’s primary function is to drive the hydraulic system and the tracks for movement.

2. Hydraulic System

  • The main hydraulic pump delivers high pressure to operate the hydraulic cylinders and motors that control the boom, arm, bucket, and other attachments.
  • Hydraulic cylinders provide the lifting force and movements for the boom, arm, and bucket.
  • Hydraulic control valves manage the flow of fluid to each cylinder and attachment, enabling precise control of movement.

3. Undercarriage

  • Track Frame: The main structural component that houses the tracks, sprockets, and rollers. It provides stability and strength for the excavator.
  • Tracks: Steel tracks that allow for movement across rough and uneven surfaces. The EC290 uses wide, durable tracks for optimal stability.
  • Rollers: Support the track system, ensuring the smooth movement of the machine on the ground.
  • Idlers and Sprockets: Guide and drive the tracks. The sprocket transfers power from the drive motor to the tracks.
  • Track Shoes: The actual pads on the track that make contact with the ground.

4. Upper Structure

  • Cab: The operator's cabin where controls, instrumentation, and safety features are housed. The cabin offers excellent visibility and comfort.
  • Swing Bearing: Allows the upper structure (cab, boom, arm) to rotate 360 degrees.
  • Counterweight: A heavy block positioned at the rear of the excavator, balancing the machine to prevent tipping during lifting and digging operations.

5. Boom, Arm (Stick), and Bucket

  • Boom: The large, vertical structure that supports the arm. The boom provides the lifting height.
  • Arm (Stick): The long part attached to the boom that extends forward and downward. It provides the reach and digging depth for the excavator.
  • Bucket: Attached to the end of the arm, the bucket is used for digging, loading, and lifting materials. The EC290 can use various attachments like a bucket, grapple, or auger.

6. Attachment System

  • This system enables the connection of different tools or implements to the arm. Common attachments include:
    • Buckets (Standard, Heavy Duty, and Rock Buckets)
    • Hydraulic Hammers
    • Grapples
    • Rippers

7. Cooling System

  • The cooling system consists of a radiator, cooling fan, and oil cooler to maintain optimal operating temperatures for the engine and hydraulic system.
  • Coolant Reservoir: Stores the coolant to prevent the engine from overheating.

8. Electrical System

  • Alternator: Charges the battery and provides power to the electrical system.
  • Battery: Supplies power for the ignition and electrical components.
  • Wiring Harness and Fuses: Ensure safe and efficient power distribution to all electrical components.

9. Transmission and Drive System

  • Final Drive Motors: Connected to the tracks, these motors convert the engine power to track movement.
  • Planetary Gears: Involved in reducing the speed and increasing the torque for track movement.

10. Swing System

  • Swing Motor: Drives the rotation of the upper structure.
  • Swing Reducer: Reduces the speed from the motor while increasing torque for smooth 360-degree rotation.
  • Swing Ring: The rotating mechanism that allows the upper part of the excavator to turn around the base.

11. Fuel System

  • Fuel Tank: Holds the diesel fuel for the engine.
  • Fuel Filters: Protect the engine by filtering out impurities from the fuel before it enters the engine.

12. Steering System

  • The EC290 is controlled through pilot-operated hydraulic control levers that allow the operator to steer and operate the tracks, as well as the boom, arm, and bucket.
  • Hydraulic Steering Cylinders: Direct the movement of the tracks for precise maneuvering of the machine.

13. Final Drive and Axle

  • The final drive is an essential part of the drivetrain that converts power from the engine into movement for the tracks. It includes a planetary gearbox, drive motor, and differential.

14. Operator Comfort and Safety

  • Hydraulic Pilot Controls: These controls offer precise handling of the excavator's movements.
  • Suspension Seat: Provides comfort for the operator during long hours of operation.
  • Air Conditioning and Heating: Maintains a comfortable climate inside the cab.
  • Safety Features: Includes rollover protection (ROPS), falling object protection (FOPS), and enhanced visibility.

15. Cab and Instrumentation

  • The cab houses the controls and displays that the operator uses to monitor and control the excavator. It typically includes:
    • Joystick Controls for boom, arm, bucket, and swing operations.
    • Display Screen: Provides information on fuel levels, engine status, hydraulic system pressure, and machine diagnostics.
